Shin’en’s catchphrase for their upcoming WiiWare racer, FAST – Racing League, is “Shift your phase,” referring to the crafts in the game being able to transform to traverse different sections of the track as efficiently as possible.

In an interview with Shin’en, we asked company co-founder, Manfred Linzner, to give us a little more insight as to how this works in the game and why it’s useful.

As it turns out, “phases” refers to coloured sections of the track that indicate a positive or negative strip of road. Running over a positive strip while your craft is in positive phase will cause it to speed up. Running over a positive strip in negative phase, however, will make you slow down. The same applies to negative strips of the track.

Matching the phase of the track yields more effects than just speed boosts though. Depending on the section of track, you could also launch your craft into the air or ride the track upside down. The idea is to master doing a perfect run of each track.

We’ll put the full interview with Shin’en, where we also talk about how the team went about designing FAST’s tracks and the concept of “visual intuitiveness” in a racer, up in the days ahead.
