Evo 2020 Organizer Confirms ‘No Plans to Cancel or Postpone’ the Event

Evo founder and organizer Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar announced on Twitter that, “There are no plans to cancel or postpone Evo 2020.” The event will be held this year from July 31 to August 1 at its usual place in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the largest and longest-running fighting game tournament in the US.

The statement comes as a response to ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus concerns that have caused other events set for February and March 2020, like Taipei Game Show and Game Developers Conference to be delayed until the summer. However, seeing as Evo was originally planned for summer anyways, it seems that the event hasn’t been affected by this wave of recent gaming sphere announcements.

Evo 2020 is scheduled to have nine main stage games, including returning ones like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Street Fighter V, Samurai Shodown, and Under Night In-Birth, a newcoming game with Granblue Fantasy Versus, and a surprising revival with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 having a special invitational tournament. Last month, Cuellar also revealed early registration leaderboard figures for the event, which had Super Smash Bros. Ultimate participants top the list with its number of participants, doubling its registration count from last year.

Here is the current Evo 2020 leaderboard for March 2020.

Evo 2020 will be held as planned from July 31 to August 1, 2020.
