Who is Messmer the Impaler in Elden Ring?

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will likely introduce a vast and intricate world filled with enigmatic characters. One of them is Messmer the Impaler. Although not much is known about the character, Bandai Namco offered players a glimpse into the darker and more sinister aspects of the Lands Between in the trailers.

If the trailers are to be believed, it seems like he earned his nickname. Like the real-life Vlad the Impaler, the moniker seems to come from the practice of impaling his enemies on spikes in early trailers. It’s a gruesome tactic that serves both as a warning to others and as a macabre art form. This method of execution historically not only instills fear, but also reflects his deep-seated belief in the power of terror as a means of control.

While it’s unclear who Messmer really is and what he wants, he seems to have a terrifying presence and enjoy cultivating it. His striking red hair is hard to ignore, matching Radagon of the Golden Order. He also is accompanied by a snake, much like Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy.

Is it possible that Messmer is a relative of theirs? His name doesn’t start with R, but it’s possible he could be a half sibling like Malenia, Blade of Miquella. It’s also possible he’s unrelated to any established characters. Although given how many bosses in Elden Ring are related, I would find that almost unlikely.

Elden Ring is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Shadow of Erdtree DLC appears on June 21, 2024.
