The latest Evangelion movie continues to break records in the franchise. Five weeks into its theatrical release, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 has now grossed over 7.4 billion yen with 4.8 million viewers. [Thanks, Game Watch!]
In the first week of its release in Japan on March 8, 2021, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 grossed 3.3 billion yen with over 2 million tickets purchased. Another significant increase came on April 10-11, 2021, where 160,807 more viewers brought in 265,203,150 yen (~$2,425,959). In 35 days after release, the total revenue number now stands at 7,426,243,700 yen (~$67,931,935) with 4,848,041 viewers.
Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion and the movie’s general director, was present at the 3.0+1.0 movie stage greeting held in Japan on April 11, 2021. During the event, he commented, “I think it’s a thankful thing for a niche robot anime like this to be able to aim for 10 billion.” Japanese social media then filled with messages hoping to make both Hideaki Anno and Shinji Ikari into “10 billion men,” in reference to reaching a possible revenue milestone. Shinji’s voice actress Megumi Ogata hosted the stage greeting, which also featured directors Kazuya Tsurumaki and Mahiro Maeda.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, the conclusion to theĀ Rebuild of Evangelion series, released in Japanese theaters on March 8, 2021. A series of promotion reels featuring six key characters from the franchise aired last week on April 5-10, 2021.
