D3 Publisher announced that it had sold over 1 million units of Earth Defense Force 5 worldwide. This number combines the number of units sold on both PlayStation 4 and PC. The company also added that over 500,000 of the units were sold in Japan. This means that the rest of the world contributed the other half to the whole tally.
EDF 5 came out first for PlayStation 4 in Japan in December 2017, and it reached 300,000 units sold in January 2018. The global release appeared digitally one year after the Japanese version came out, in December 2018. D3 Publisher worked with PQube to release physical editions of the game in October 2020. The company also brought the game to PC via Steam in July 2019. In total, it took over four-and-a-half years for the game to reach this milestone.
The million sales milestone announcement for EDF 5 comes just as D3 Publisher is preparing the game’s sequel. The company will release Earth Defense Force 6 for PlayStation 5 and 4 in Japan on August 25, 2022. The fifth mainline entry depicted a massive alien invasion of Earth and how the eponymous force mobilized for the defense war. The upcoming sequel will take place three years after those events.
Earth Defense Force 5 is available worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC.
