In September, the Nihon Securities Journal reported that Wii MMORPG, Dragon Quest X, had about 300,000 paying subscribers, each paying 1,000 yen (about $13) a month to play the game.
At that point, Dragon Quest X had sold 556,000 copies in Japan, according to Japanese sales tracker, Media Create. This means that around half of Dragon Quest X buyers were paying the MMORPG’s monthly subscription fee.
Since then, the number of paid subscribers for Dragon Quest X has surpassed 400,000. Square Enix reported the news during their financial results briefing. As of the first week of October, Dragon Quest X had sold 568,000 copies in Japan.
It should be noted that Dragon Quest X was released in August, so it hasn’t taken very long at all for it to reach this milestone.
In contrast, it took Final Fantasy XI, another Square Enix MMORPG, 18 months to just about reach the 400,000 mark for paying subscribers. Then, two whole years after its release, Final Fantasy XI finally crossed 500,000 paying subscribers.
In Spring 2013, Square Enix will release Dragon Quest X for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console with HD graphics and support for the Wii U’s GamePad controller, which will allow players to play it away from their TV.
