On February 14th, Square Enix released a remake of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS. As revealed in an earlier report, the game sold 443,656 copies in its first week on store shelves.
That’s a lower figure than the opening week sales of the first Dragon Quest Monsters game, which was also remade for 3DS back in 2012. That game sold 513,183 copies in its first week, which is a fair bit higher than Monsters 2.
Here’s the catch, though—Dragon Quest Monsters was sold out for weeks in Japan, which meant people couldn’t buy it until Square Enix finally managed to get more copies of the game out to retailers. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 doesn’t seem to be having this problem.
As a result, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 may end up outselling Dragon Quest Monsters in in the long run, according to Japanese sales tracker Media Create.
In its second week on store shelves, Dragon Quest Monsters sold around 83,000 copies, bringing total sales to 596,512 copies sold. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 sold over 118,000 copies in its second week, and total sales of this game as of week 2 are at 562,083 copies sold.
Provided there’s a large enough stock at retail, Media Create say that Dragon Quest Monsters 2 may end up outselling the first game after its third week. That would be quite the turnaround for a game that debuted lower than its predecessor.
