Crypton Future Media has announced that it will allow independent creators to monetize content created using popular Vocaloid characters like Hatsune Miku on YouTube. Creators will also be able to upload content featuring the voice software for Kaito, Meiko, and Kagamine Len and Rin. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
However, this doesn’t mean that creators will have free range on what they can create. Crypton Future Media will keep an eye on what creators will be uploading to YouTube. The company strictly prohibits any content that could potentially damage the brand of these characters. This includes uploading content that is otherwise deemed offensive, or videos that may be seen as misleading. A full list of what is and isn’t allowed for monetization has been uploaded to the Piapro website. There is currently no indication that this will apply to creators outside of Japan.
That said, the ban on the monetization of independently created Vocaloid content has officially lifted. However, monetization of Vocaloid content is limited to the YouTube Partner Program. Any other means of monetization is again, strictly prohibited. Crypton has released a statement following the lifting of this ban. The Japanese media company states that the company is grateful for the support it has received over the years. Additionally, it will work towards enhancing the experience of content creators.
