Square Enix will publish a children’s Final Fantasy picture book featuring the adventures of an inventor named Cid and his Chocobo sidekick. Chocobo and the Flying Ship (チョコボと空飛ぶ船) will release in Japan on December 16, 2021. People can get it via the Square Enix e-Store for ¥1,320 (about $11). Pre-orders are currently open and feature bonus items such as canvas bags, t-shirts, and a special message card from the authors. [Thanks, Game Watch!]
Chocobo and the Flying Ship is the tale of Cid and Chocobo as they attempt to build a flying ship. The book will apparently be full of references to older Final Fantasy titles. It even features the original heroes from the first installment of Final Fantasy fighting against a Djinn.
Illustrating the book is Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana. The book’s author is Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon 2 Director Kazuhiko Aoki. It will include 40 fully-colored, B5-sized pages.
Square Enix is also selling new merchandise as part of the book’s launch. An illustrated tote bag and a special card with messages from Itahana and Aoki will be included in a special set that costs ¥2,750 (about $24). You can also choose your own bonus item from a range of products, such as a t-shirt, mug, pouch, jigsaw puzzle, or cushion.
