Selling Sunlight will have players acting as a masked merchant, one who’s lost their original face for defying the Sun in some way. Through their actions in sales and with the other characters, it will decide what crime the player committed against the game’s deity to result in them losing their identity, and how they will deal with it through the rest of their life.
Selling Sunlight will have players travelling to several cities in a world where the only civilization is along a line of light where the sun never sets. Players will meet many different characters and merchants along this strip of towns bathed in perpetual daylight, making friends and sales based on their behaviors with them.
The player will be able to choose how they carry themselves in every interaction. By using charm, cunning, or outright seducing them, players will be able to get better prices from merchants, or grow closer to the people they meet. This can help maximize profits, create bonds that will make the journey less lonely, and will also go toward putting together the story of what happened to the player. All of these decisions will create the player’s story over time, past and present, resulting in several story routes throughout the game.
Players will have to worry about more than their behavior, as things like travel routes and cart load sizes can affect them when moving from place to place, as well. Not only this, but other events, like randomized encounters on the road, can lead to new friendships or consequences for the player as well.
Selling Sunlight’s trailer has not announced a release date for the game, but does note that a demo will be available in September of 2017.
