Chainsaw Man manga chapter 138 appeared on August 8, 2023, continuing the saga of Denji’s strange encounter. When we last left Denji, he’d found himself a date. Not the most conventional date, mind you, as she does ask him to lick a demon’s tendril if he wants a chance with her. Denji goes through with it. Subsequently, the young woman escorts him to a karaoke room, where she intends to follow through with her side of the bargain.

Denji finds himself ambushed by a group of armed men while his date inappropriately belts out a song. Denji brawls with the assaulters and his date eventually joins in, grabbing a baseball bat for herself. And that leads us to Chapter 138 and the continuation of one of the weirdest dates ever.

What happens in Chainsaw Man Chapter 138?

The story opens on Denji and his date beating the armed thugs to a pulp. For a moment, he lets his guard down, which prompts his date to swoop in and save the day. She knocks out an assailant aiming a gun at Denji, only to discover that it’s merely a model gun. She remarks about how men armed with baseball bats wouldn’t carry guns, but Denji interrupts her musing to accuse her of being the enemy, particularly because she left him to fight off the attackers alone.

We eventually find out from Yoshida that Denji’s date has a name — Fumiko Mifune — and she works for the Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 7. Fumiko reveals that she’s in charge of guarding Denji during his student life due to the fame he’s acquired as Chainsaw Man, and we catch on quickly that she has a habit of calling him “Senpai” even though she’s 22.

Fumiko discloses that she flirted with Denji because she’s “really into him” and he’s “the one and only Chainsaw Man,” and that’s pretty much the only explanation we get for that. After Fumiko receives a stern smack upside the head from Yoshida for losing focus, we cut to Asa and Yoru.

Asa and Yoru are watching a news report on TV about their latest activity as Devil Hunters. Asa notes how the reporter called her “beautiful,” whereas Yoru is only interested in the general fame and glory that comes with the territory.Asa reiterates that they’re doing this to save Chainsaw Man, but Yoru contradicts her by mentioning how frustrating it is that Chainsaw Man was able to receive the same happiness.

Asa says that the fame is creeping her out, as it’s an invasion of her privacy. Yoru casts her a look of disbelief, which causes Asa’s facade of worry to crumble away as she can’t help but smiles at the news.

Meanwhile, in an alleyway, Denji comes across a Chainsaw Man Church recruitment poster, only to appear baffled by the inclusion of Asa. Some stranger notes how frustrated Denji seems. Denji asks the man why he’s talking to him, only for the stranger to cryptically reveal that although Denji might not remember him, the pair have met before.

Eventually, the stranger reveals himself to be the Sword Hybrid from the fight against Makima and Tokyo Special Division 5. Denji, still utterly clueless, asks himself who the hell Sword Man is.
