We’re living in a rather fortunate time. Konami is poised to bring original Suikoden game and its sequel back via Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. Rabbit and Bear Studio released the spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. We felt it would be a perfect time for all of us to share our favorite Suikoden entries and note which game we’d most recommend and consider best for a newcomer.
Suikoden 2 is probably the most well known, but I’d recommend not skipping the first game. It’s always interesting to watch how a game series develops over time, but honestly its also just a very playable game for its age and the story stands pretty well on its own. –Elliot
I would say Suikoden 3 is the Suikoden game everyone should play. Partially because Elliot already recommended Suikoden 2, which is also in competition for best game in the series. However, Suikoden 2 is very much tied to the original game, with many characters overlapping. Suikoden 3 is fun because we get to see three different main character’s larger stories, as well as some smaller stories from other minor protagonists. It’s a very solid game, and the fact that you choose who gets the initial True Rune and pick your protagonist for when all the stories come together is fun! — Jenni
