The best romance manga of all time include some of the very best series ever committed to manga form. Of course, these series include a ton of romance that will make your heart flutter, but they are so much more than that. From characters to storytelling to art, these best romance manga are worth a look for everyone, in no particular order.
Best Romance Manga: Fruits Basket
When it comes to the top three manga I highly recommend to any romance, I can’t help but mention Fruits Basket. This incredible series from Natsuki Takaya (Amazon) is not only one of the best romance series, but one of the most impactful and successful manga series of all time.
I can’t get over this phenomenal cast of characters. The core love triangle at the center of the series is compelling enough on its own, but the rest of the supporting cast is also excellent. It has everything from drama to comedy to a little bit of action and plenty of twists and turns. This is a genuine masterpiece of the genre.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
As someone who, in the past, primarily watched anime and rarely read manga, a series influencing me to read its manga version is a statement. Such is the case with Kaguya-sama. It tells the story of two student council members who clearly like each other but battle to force the other to confess first. Its ridiculous premise leads to some of the wildest and funniest antics in all of manga.
Skip Beat!
This long-running romance manga is the one for those who want a lengthy story. Skip Beat! first began its serialization in 2002. Well over 20 years later and the series is still going strong with more than 300 chapters to enjoy. The initial premise of a girl aiming to succeed in show business to get revenge against her pop idol wannabe love interest who took advantage of her is unmatched.
Other Amazing Romance Manga Worth Checking Out
The three above are the romance manga I highly recommend everyone to check out. But they are far from the only ones that are the best of the genre. Here are the best of the rest series you should also consider taking a look at:
- My Love Story!!: An unlikely pair fall in love with some truly funny scenes.
- Horimiya: This occasionally hot and heavy love story is a bit more realistic in its depiction of young adults.
- Ao Haru Ride: Two childhood love interests reunite and try to rekindle their relationship.
- Your Lie in April: This is as depressing as it gets in the romance genre. If you don’t mind crying, read this one.
- Kimi ni Todoke: This beautiful, highly popular series follows the lonely girl who falls for the popular boy and how their relationship changes one another.
- A Silent Voice: One of the first manga I ever read, this masterpiece will break your heart with its depiction of a deaf girl who falls for her former bully.
- Senpai Is an Otokonoko: This stunning and sometimes gut-wrenching manga series is so underrated. It explores queer characters and romance in a realistic way no series has come close to touching, especially within the lens of Japanese culture.
