There are over 200 mounts in Final Fantasy XIV, meaning players have plenty of choices when it comes to choosing their main ride around Eorzea. But which ones are the best, but also sometimes easy to earn? Here are our best mounts recommendations for all situations in Final Fantasy XIV, with many being manageable to get.
So are there any truly “best” mounts in Final Fantasy XIV?
Like anything cosmetic in Final Fantasy XIV, the best mounts are subjective. For example, I’m not the biggest fan of the Ratholos mount. However, it’s a popular pick among many because not only is it a huge dragon, it’s also from Monster Hunter.
Mounts are unlocked in various ways in the MMORPG, meaning ways to get certain ones may not be of interest to you. For example, if you prefer crafting to grinding in PVP, mounts earned via Frontline and Crystalline Conflict may not be of interest and “better” for you.
Best mounts for FFXIV newcomers to try and get
If you’ve just unlocked your first mount in Final Fantasy XIV, you shouldn’t expect to suddenly be getting new ones left and right. Unlocking new mounts via gameplay takes time and is often linked to later content, though there is a handful you can obtain in the base game of A Realm Reborn.
So here are some of the best FFXIV mounts I’d recommend if you are a beginner:
Unicorn
The Unicorn mount is exclusive to the Conjurer Class. Upon reaching Conjurer level 30 and finishing the level 30 Class Quest, you’ll gain access to the “Unicorn Power” sidequest by speaking to Braya inside the Conjurer’s Guild.
You will be rewarded with the Unicorn Whistle for completing the side quest, which nets you the Unicorn mount upon use.
Magitek Death Claw
As you earn achievements in Final Fantasy XIV, you gain Achievement Points, which are spent on Achievement Certificates by speaking to Jonathas in Old Gridania.
Once you’ve earned six Achievement Certificates, you can trade them for the Magitek Death Claw Identification Key. Using it unlocks the Magitek Death Claw mount.
Bomb Palanquin
In A Realm Reborn, there are five Beast Tribes that you can befriend. One of them is the Kobold Beast Tribe, located at the 789th Order Dig in Outer La Noscea. Completing Kobold Daily Quests earns Reputation with the Kobolds.
Once you reach Trusted Reputation rank with the Beast Tribe, you’ll be able to purchase the Bomb Palanquin Horn for 120,000 Gil from the Kobold Vendor. Using it unlocks the Bomb Palanquin mount.
PVP mounts you can earn in Final Fantasy 14
A few mounts can be earned in PVP in FFXIV, with some tied to achievements, others to special events, and even more to Seasons. The following three are ones I’d recommend:
Fylgja
Fylgja was a reward earned through Series Malmstones in PVP Series 2 between Patch 6.2 and 6.3, which ran from August 23, 2022, to January 10, 2023.
The mount isn’t currently available, and whether it will be unlockable again in the future is unknown. It is possible that it could be added to the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store or via a Moogle Treasure Trove event at some point—we’ll just have to wait and see.
Goten
Goten is one of three mounts earned through the GARO event collaboration. It began for the second time on April 11, 2022, in Patch 6.1, and is still ongoing. The first GARO event lasted for three years before it ended, so it is likely that it will run until at least 2025 this time around.
To earn the Goten mount, equip a title given to you by the Disreputable Priest at the Wolves’ Den Pier. Then win 30 Feast or Crystalline Conflict matches while you have the title equipped to earn the ‘Fame Fatale’ achievement and the Goten Pipe. Once used, the Goten Pipe adds Goten to your mount list.
Logistics System
The Logistics System mount is one of the most time-consuming mounts that you can earn through PVP in Final Fantasy XIV, making it somewhat of a rarity. To earn it, you must unlock the ‘Behind Enemy Lines I’ achievement.
To get the achievement, win 200 Frontline matches with one of the three Grand Companies. Once the achievement pops, you’ll get the Logistics System Identification Key, which unlocks the Logistics System mount.
Best crafting and gathering mounts in FFXIV
There are some mounts that you can only obtain via crafting and gathering activities, meaning many players who aren’t interested in honing their Disciple of the Hand or Land skills are unlikely ever to unlock them.
Ufiti
Gatherers and crafters can earn the Ufiti mount by trading in 8,400 Skybuilder’s Scrips for the Ufiti Horn at The Firmament in Ishgard.
Alternatively, players could trade 50 Irregular Tomestones of Verity for the Ufiti Horn during the Moogle Treasure Trove Event that ran from July 25, 2022 to August 23, 2022.
Ehll Tou
Ehll Tou is obtained via the level 70 “On Ehll Tou’s Wings” sidequest as a part of the Ishgardian Restoration questline at The Firmament in Ishgard.
Once completed, you’ll get the Ehll Tou Whistle, which unlocks the Ehll Tou mount when used.
And of course, the paid Final Fantasy XIV
If you’re willing to fork out some cash for a mount, the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store offers some neat ones that you can immediately acquire. The best ones are pricy, though!
Shadow Wolf
Shadow Wolf is currently $24.00 USD / £13.80 GBP on the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store.
Fatter Cat
Fatter Cat is currently $24.00 USD / £13.80 GBP on the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store.
Megashiba
Megashiba is currently $24.00 USD / £13.80 GBP on the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store.
Other generally cool mounts in Final Fantasy XIV to consider
Ssome FFXIV mounts maybe among the coolest ones you’ll see. Here’s what I’d recommend going for, though note that they aren’t the easiest to obtain:
Forgiven Reticence
Forgiven Reticence is obtained by gathering a whopping 3,200 Sacks of Nuts and purchasing the Forgiven Reticence Horn from The Crystarium or Eulmore. This special currency is gathered by killing Elite Marks via Nutsy Clan Hunts and Guildship Hunts.
To put this into perspective, one Elite Mark grants 100 Sacks of Nuts, meaning you’ll need to do this 32 times. Prepare for the grind if you want this mount!
Demi-Ozma
The Demi-Ozma mount is obtained after your first completion of The Baldesion Arsenal, a difficult dungeon added in Patch 4.55.
Once you’ve defeated the final boss, the “We’re on Your Side I” achievement will pop, rewarding you with the mount.
Sunforged
Sunforged is a difficult mount to obtain due to its drop rate and the Raid it appears in. The Sunforged Crystal is a random drop from the second chest in the Abyssos: The Eighth Circle (Savage), a High-End Raid added in the Endwalker expansion.
Kamuy of the Nine Tails
One of the best looking mounts in Final Fantasy XIV, the Kamuy of the Nine Tails mount is acquired through the “A Lone Wolf No More” Stormblood quest.
It’s not easy to get, though, as you’ll need to get your hands on the seven other Wolf mounts first, which are rare drops through the Stormblood EX Trials.
Final Fantasy XIV is available to play now on the PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
