So we’ve already gone over how to get the Ring of the Maiden in Unicorn Overlord and pick who to marry, but it’s also important to consider how good (and bad) some of the relationships between  Alain and characters are. Knowing how the Rapport conversations and ensuing proposal talks go may help determine which person might be right for your playthrough.

Okay. So. I’m not going to actually “rank” people by best to worst. Depending on whose personalities, appearances, and usefulnesses you appreciate, someone I consider my number 1 could be your least favorite. So instead, I’m just listing some of the conversations and Rapports I found most satisfying to watch.

  • Berengaria: I found this one really interesting. The two have a good dynamic during their conversations leading up to the proposal. Then how the talk actually goes when Alain brings it up to Berengaria is so unexpected.
  • Berenice: This conversation is fun, because it feels like the two of them are equals in terms of power. They’re both such strong individuals, and it feels like they’re going to continue their sparring as even stronger partners.
  • Celeste: I find it charming how she ends up seeing herself as a fairy tale or Disney princess through the course of their conversations and proposal.
  • Dinah: She’s a tsundere! I love how she wants him to prioritize Yunifi, but is also constantly slipping up and showing what he means to her too.
  • Eltolinde: The relationship between her and Alain has this “forbidden” aspect to it, due to her role. But it’s also so much fun to see them realize what they mean to each other.
  • Fran: This is one I find really amusing. Her gryphon ends up playing a major part, which I like. And her reaction is very sweet.
  • Melisandre: I love how, even though she’s so openly pursuing Alain in the battle that adds her to the army, it’s him approaching her constantly. Her commentary and tendency to get flustered are great to watch.
  • Nina: After seeing how she felt about not getting to be a knight, and her shock during the whole process and proposal, is great. She always remains earnest and herself.
  • Rosalinde: I loved how she opened up and was herself around Alain, and how enthusiastic she is to be with him. Where her sister’s was very “forbidden love” and proper, hers is more casual, natural, and lighthearted.
  • Primm: Honestly, her Rapport conversations weren’t my favorite. But I loved the actual proposal. It was very her, and her misinterpreting the situation and the way she handled it was fun to watch.
  • Scarlett: I sort of felt like Vanillaware pushed Scarlett as the “default” love interest. It’s fine, but it also feels like it is expected in a way others aren’t and has extra attention as a result.

I’ve found that, in general, the ones that end up feeling the “worst” are ones who don’t really connect with Alain. This means Vanillaware sort of warns you, if you check the Rapport section.

Now, I’m not going to outright call anyone terrible. Some of these folks could be readers’ favorite units. And to them, even a moment that isn’t as elaborate or built up as one of the earlier ones could feel great. However, I found the following conversations and Ring of the Maiden moments felt unsatisfying compared to others. Because of the lack of substance, nature of the talk, or other factors, they didn’t click with me.

  • Bertrand
  • Bryce
  • Chloe: This one I feel like I have to explain, because she does get a full three Rapport conversations with Alain. Given her relationship with Lex, it feels weird to me.
  • Colm
  • Fodoquia
  • Galadmir
  • Gloucester
  • Govil
  • Hilda
  • Jeremy
  • Magellan
  • Mandrin
  • Monica: Why would you do this to Clive?
  • Renault
