Siliconera got to spend some time with Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson this year at E3. While the game still fixes a lens on the girls we know from the Hanzo National Academy, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson also introduces a number of new students that make up the somewhat-titular (but surely titillating) Homura Crimson Squad. While the gameplay certainly felt like your typical Senran Kagura game, I felt the most notable aspects of Deep Crimson were in its intimate details.
One of the features new to Senran Kagura is a music player. Much like the Music section of the vault in Super Smash Bros. 3DS, players can collect musical tracks by progressing through the game. Unlocked tracks can be accessed in the music player menu, and while I suspect the feature will be compatible with sleep mode, the audio jack was blocked on the demo system and I was unable to confirm this.
Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson’s rather forward approach to fan service makes it easy to forget that it’s still a game, but there’s one feature in the music player that brings it down to earth for me, if even for just a sweet moment: composer notes. Each track is accompanied by comments from the composer. While some are short and sweet, others are long and detailed. It’s easy for a tidbit like this to get lost, but it was clear reading some of the track notes that the composer actually cared about delivering a solid soundtrack.
Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson also allows for incredible customization of each character, from bunny ears to suggestive bandage wraps, but for people playing the game for its story, you can make it so that these costumes won’t appear in cinematic cutscenes. This was a deliberate choice by Kenichiro Takaki, the game’s producer, to lessen trivialization of its characters and cut the fan service for a more general audience to enjoy it without feeling taken advantage of.
