In the game, the popoto is described as “a starchy tuberous vegetable originally introduced to Eorzea by explorers from the distant western continent.” It’s safe to say that given its description and image, it is Final Fantasy XIV‘s version of potatoes from the real world.
Square Enix announced many other Final Fantasy XIV collaborations with real-world brands in the past. In 2020, the Japanese convenience store chain Lawson held a event where Final Fantasy XIV chocolates were sold, along with a an in-game mount with every purchase. These were Bikkuri Man Chocolate sweets, a brand produced by Lotte. In August 2023, Square Enix announced a tie-in with Vogue Japan to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary. During this latest event, players could submit screenshots of their characters wearing outfits that pertained to the chosen theme of “future adventures.”
Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. Details about the Koikeya popoto crossover will appear on August 25, 2023.
