Fate/Samurai Remnant will take place during the Keian Era in Japan, and many of the characters are based on real-life historical figures. Ahead of the launch of the game, Koei Tecmo has updated its website to give an overview of the major players involved in the Waxing Moon Ritual. Not all of the Servants are revealed yet, as of the time of writing, which might mean that there are surprise characters to see when the game launches.

Here are the characters who are Masters in Fate/Samurai Remnant:

Miyamoto Iori (CV: Kengo Kawanishi)

The Master of Saber, as well as Miyamoto Musashi’s adopted son and disciple. He is a ronin who never got to finish learning the Niten Ichiryu swordsmanship style due to Musashi’s untimely death. In real life (and perhaps in the game as well), Iori was Musashi’s biological nephew. He also worked as a vassal to Ogasawara Tadazane, who was a samurai daimyo.

Zheng Chenggong (CV: Tomoaki Maeno)

A general with the nickname of “Koxinga,” and has the respect of the Longwu Emperor. He is half-Japanese and half-Chinese. He is Archer’s Master. In real life, Zheng Chenggong attacked Dutch colonists who had settled in Formosa (Taiwan) in 1661. Due to this history, there’s the chance that he and Dorothea (who is the daughter of a Swede colonizer) will have an antagonistic relationship beyond just the confines of the Waxing Moon Ritual.

Chiemon (CV: Nobuhiko Okamoto)

He is Lancer’s Master and is a mysterious survivor of the Shimabara rebellion. There are a lot of bandages on his face, hiding his appearance, and there appears to be blood on his clothing. It’s unknown whether that’s Chiemon’s blood or his enemies’. Due to his role in the Shimabara rebellion, he likely has some ties to Shiro Amakusa. However, it’s unclear if Amakusa will make an appearance in this game. Chiemon is an original character and does not have a real-life counterpart.

Yui Shousetu (CV: Mutsumi Tamura)

Yui is Rider’s Master. They’re a fighter and scholar that ronin admire, and they’re the head of a military academy in Edo. Though they serve the shogunate, they’re not fully on board with what the government is doing. In real life, Yui was one of the ringleaders of the Keian Uprising, in which he attempted to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate.

Dorothea Coyett (CV: Aya Hirano)

A foreign woman who entered Japan from another country, and is Assassin’s Master. She is a mage from the Clock Tower, and this history seems to mark her as the most magically-experienced Master in the Waxing Moon Ritual. Her father is Fredrik Coyett, who is a Swedish nobleman. Dorothea herself does not have a real-life counterpart. However, Fredrik (Frederick) Coyett was the final colonial governor of Dutch Formosa (Taiwan). Zheng Chenggong forced him to give up Fort Zeelandia after a nine-month-long invasion.

Takao Dayu (CV: Ami Koshimizu)

She is Berserker’s Master and a dayu of Miura-ya in Yoshiwara. As a dayu, she is one of the highest ranking courtesans in Yoshiwara. Takao is a title that courtesans pass down so it’s unclear which one she is. But she might be Takao II due to the time period of the game (taking into account the above Zheng Chenggong and Coyett conflict).

So far, there’s no information on Caster’s Master. They also have fabric over their face, covering up anything about their appearance. Their identity will likely be a key point of tension in the story.

Saber (CV: Hibiku Yamamura)

Iori’s Servant who wields a wavy sword and wears old-fashioned clothing. Saber is a proud warrior and plans on fighting the Waxing Moon Ritual alone even though Iori is also a swordsman. Exploring Edo with Saber is one of the things Iori can do to raise their bond and increase their powers in combat.

Lancer (CV: Maaya Sakamoto)

Chiemon’s Servant and is a familiar face for those who have played Fate/Grand Order. Though Jeanne d’Arc Alter has appeared in previous works as an Avenger, she’s a Lancer in Fate/Samurai Remnant. She wields two lances and controls black flames.

Rider (CV: ???)

Rider is Yui’s Servant and their True Name is unknown. They wear black amor as well as a long sword. Like with Medusa, the reason for their Class (as in, what they ride on) might be apparent in their skills or Noble Phantasm.

Berserker (CV: Ayane Sakura)

Takao Dayu’s Servant, whose true name is Miyamoto Musashi. She is the one who created the Niten Ichiryu swordsmanship style, which Iori uses. However, even though they’re from the same school of swordplay and she shares a name with his teacher, she doesn’t look like how Iori remembers them.

As of the time of writing, we do not know the identities of Archer, Caster, or Assassin. Like with Caster’s Master, their identities might be a surprise revelation in the game. Koei Tecmo might also reveal them in future trailers.

Ogasawara Kaya (CV: Misaki Kuno)

There’s not a lot of information on Kaya on the website but it appears that she, like Musashi, is not from this iteration of Edo. She has a Spirit Origin that’s different from the one that she usually manifests in. Since her surname is Ogasawara, she might have some relation to Ogasawara Tadazane, who was the lord of the real-life Miyamoto Iori.

Crimson Codex (CV: Cha Furin)

A talking magic book that Iori’s Musashi left behind. He can float in the air, has a personality of his own, and teaches Iori magic in Musashi’s place.

Fate/Samurai Remnant will come out on September 28, 2023 worldwide for the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam.
