A new anime series based on the Scott Pilgrim comic series is in development at Netflix in partnership with Universal Studios. The production involves Japanese anime studio Science Saru, as well as series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. [Thanks, ANN and Escapist!]
O’Malley is writing the Scott Pilgrim anime and is credited as an executive producer. Also producing is BenDavid Grabinski, who wrote wrote the 2019 reboot of Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Science Saru is the Japan-based animation studio behind shows such as Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Heike Story, and the Netflix-exclusive Devilman Crybaby. Its CEO, Eunyong Choi, will be involved as a producer on Scott Pilgrim while Abel Góngora directs the anime. Góngora previously directed TO-B1, a short in the Star Wars: Visions animated anthology.
As for Scott Pilgrim itself, the six-volume comic series follows the adventures of the eponymous Toronto slacker. Scott is the bass player for Sex Bob-omb, his unsuccessful garage band. He meets a woman named Ramona Flowers, a subspace traveler. In order to date Ramona, he’ll have to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends, who all have special powers. The comic was adapted into a 2010 live-action film starring Michael Cera and directed by Edgar Wright, who has an executive producer credit on the Scott Pilgrim anime.
Scott Pilgrim was also adapted into video game form by Ubisoft. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game took the form of a side-scrolling beat ’em up reminiscent of classic beat ’em ups like River City Ransom. It was released in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PS3 originally, and re-released on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna in early 2021.
The Netflix Scott Pilgrim anime adaptation is in development, with no officially announced release window. Check out Siliconera’s review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.
