Microsoft’s Xbox team has worked hard to bridge the gap between generations. Between Smart Delivery, cross-generational optimization and a wealth of Game Pass options? Everyone has a lot of new stuff to play. Here are the brightest gems in the bunch: our Xbox One Game of the Year 2021 selections.
These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. For more of the year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2021 archive.
Winner: Dodgeball Academia
Dodgeball Academia blindsided us with its pure fun. Part Super Dodge Ball, part Inazuma Eleven, part Pokemon? It’s a clever game with compelling gameplay and legitimately funny writing. Rather than starting from scratch, it finds and implements elements it likes from under-iterated classics. And, in another win for Xbox fans? Yeah, it’s on Game Pass. You have no excuse. Hitman 3
The intricate sandboxes of Hitman 3 make for fascinating puzzles. So many games struggle with creating the illusion of freedom, managing a few viable ways to take on a challenge. Hitman truly lets you use your creativity to accomplish your goals. This third entry in the franchise’s modern era builds on what worked before, and feels like a true labor of love as IO takes more steps toward true independence.
Sable
Sable was well-known for years before its release for its distinctive art style. And deservedly so! So the pressure was certainly on when it finally launched in 2021. Thankfully, its chill, meditative pace and meaningful narrative didn’t let it down.
