While A Song of Ice and Fire did provide some inspiration for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Oda also stated that while in university he studied philosophy and ideology. Additionally, he revealed that Kenichi Iwao had recommended him George R. R. Martin’s book. Iwao was the previous scenario writer for Final Fantasy XIV.

The interview also revealed details regarding House Dzemael, which the game references several times throughout the narrative. The name of the Ishgardian House is tacked onto the Dzemael Darkhold dungeon, which players can explore shortly before experiencing the Heavensward expansion. Oda elaborated on the backstory of House Dzemael, which includes their failure to complete the Darkhold. He also revealed that the current Count of House Dzemael could potentially be leading the Ishgardian Restoration efforts players could previously participate in.

Final Fantasy XIV is immediately available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
