The latest issue of Famitsu has a special coverage on the massive hit of Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa Heisei Reiwa mo Teiban! in Japan. This issues contains an interview with Momotaro Dentetsu‘s creator Akira Sakuma. In the interview, Sakuma gives his thoughts on the game’s success. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]
In regards to the latest Momotaro Dentetsu game topping game sales charts for 10 weeks in a row, Sakuma found it simply “unbelievable.” He said that the gameplay design of Momotaro Dentetsu itself hadn’t been changed at all. Sakuma considered Konami’s allowance for Let’s Play streams as the major factor behind the massive success.
The article also included a brief interview with a game section manager for Bic Camera, one of Japan’s major store chains. The store manager attributed the success of the new Momotaro Dentetsu game to promotions that include television programs as well as demands for nostalgia and at-home entertainment.
Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa Heisei Reiwa mo Teiban! has been setting records in the franchise ever since it was released on November 19, 2020. After reaching 500 thousand units sold within a week after its release, the game continued to dominate Japan’s game charts for the next two months. It reached 1 million units sold in December 2020 and 2 million in January 2021. Most recently, Konami updated the figures to 2.5 million units sold in total as of February 4, 2021.
