The original Mother 2 staff were given special “Sukajan” jackets to commemorate the title’s launch in 1994. Now fans will get a chance to purchase their own this February in Japan. The special jacket will release as part of creator Shigesato Itoi’s Hobonichi Project. [Thanks, 4Gamer.]
The Mother 2 Sukajan jacket has always been considered an extremely rare collector’s item. However, it was more of a trophy for the original creators, for having completed the game’s development. To give you an idea of what it meant to late Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, he once called it one of his “most prized possessions” in a tweet from 2013. Check it out below:
[岩田]こんにちは、任天堂の岩田です。昨日に続き、『MOTHER2』のグッズです。これは、スタッフに配られた特製のスカジャンです。ロゴも、しっかりと刺繍で再現されています。これも、私の宝物の一つです。 pic.twitter.com/Nk1PORojeX

“[Iwata] Hello, this is Iwata from Nintendo. Continuing from yesterday, we have a look at more goods from Mother 2. This Sukajan was specially made and distributed to the staff. The logo is firmly reproduced by embroidery. This is also one of my most prized possessions.”
Moreover, rising Japanese fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga’s label, Anrealage, will be involved in its joint development. Tailor Toyo will handle the production side.
The Mother 2 jacket itself will go for 88,000 yen (roughly $845) and release sometime in February 2021. It will be available to purchase through the Hobonichi Store. More details will be available on the official website later.
Back in June, Shigesato Itoi’s Hobonichi Mother Project saw the release of the Pollyanna “Mother” Official Comic.
