Goodbye Volcano High is a new 2D adventure game from KO_OP, and it’s already bringing some reptile feelings to the fore. New console reveals are usually associated with fancy 3D graphics, but the GNOG developer’s newest evokes what appears to be fully hand-drawn 2D animation in the style of cartoons from the ’90s. This time in service to story focused on what appears to be dinosaur teens in high school. In fact, if you close your eyes and listen only to the trailer narration, you might think you were listening to trailer for a Life is Strange title. The focus of the trailer appears two be on two specific dinosaur teens, an unnamed purple triceratops and a winged one. They’re in a band together, too.
Players will guide Fang, a typical 18-year-old dinosaur protagonist through a “cinematic narrative adventure”, filled with choices and multiple endings, as they encounter the end of an era and establish new romance. Musical minigames will also help flesh out the mechanics. The game will be fully voice-acted, and includes Lachlan Watson, who played Theo Putnam on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Its soundtrack is composed by Dabu (who composed the soundtrack for Dwarf Fortress) and features performances by Montreal-based vocalist Brigitte Naggar.
The game is destined for multiple platforms, but will include PS5-exclusive features, such as using the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback to enhance the storytelling.
Goodbye Volcano High will come to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2021.
