GDC 2020 may have been postponed, but that doesn’t mean nothing will be happening over the days it was originally going to be held. GDC organizer Informa Tech announced via the conference’s official website that a slew of streamed conferences via Twitch will be taking the place of its original live sessions.
This makes a lot of sense, as GDC talks are structured and planned in advance anyways, and it would provide an opportunity for the general public to also listen in on how their favorite games are made. In the message, the organizers thanked many of its original participants for graciously submitting recorded versions of their GDC talks to make up for the postponement. The talks will air via GDC’s Twitch channel from 9am to 5pm PT during that five day period.
While a detailed schedule for when each recorded talk will appear is not yet available, it has been confirmed that virtual award ceremonies for The Independent Games Festival (IGF) and Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) will be streamed at 5pm PT/8pm ET on March 18, 2020. The official site will be updated with more stream details later on.
That said, it’s now uncertain whether the main event itself will continue to be held during Summer 2020, especially if some or most of the talks will be shown on the conference’s original dates. In other related news, recently Gamedev.world announced a public fundraising event featuring a Game Jam to aid developers who invested in attending GDC and are affected by its postponement.
