Child of Light creative director Patrick Plourde mentioned in an interview that while the story for a prequel to the award-winning RPG has been conceived, he does not see a future where the game will be put into production. [Thanks, VGC!]
For some context – back in August 2018 Plourde tweeted out a picture of Child of Light that teased a sequel via a piece of paper in the top-right corner. Nowadays though, he regrets making that tease. That document was in fact a 4-5 page summary of what would be a prequel story for Child of Light, focusing on two protagonists “linked by friendship” but ultimately “going on different paths with different motivations.” The game would be inspired by Swan Lake, and examine how people change as they grow up.
That said, he doubts that it will happen, as most of the original staff behind the game has left the company, as well as because Ubisoft is all-in on ‘Games as a Service’ games right now. “I’m not holding my breath,” he said. That said, he mentioned that the live-action TV show announced by Ubisoft could lead to something, as Ubisoft would likely want to capitalize on the opportunity.
Child of Light is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
