This week started off with R-Type Final 2 being announced, an April Fool’s joke that turned out to be realer than first thought. In the latest issue of Famitsu, Granzella director Kazuma Kujo, who formerly directed the R-Type series as well, talked about how the project began its inception. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089!]

Here are the highlights:

  • Kazuma Kujo is taking up the role of game designer once more, while Goro Matsuo, another former Irem employee, will be the producer of the title.

  • According to Kujo, he had originally thought he had done everything he’d wanted to do with the horizontal scrolling shmup genre by R-Type Final, but now and then he’d think about the genre.

  • He thought that fans would be mad if they made a game after game literally titled Final, but after talking to fans on social media, he found that a lot of people wished for another game in the series, and thus set his mind to do it.

  • Kujo: “All we have is previous experiences from making R-Type games, and the guts to take action. On the financial end, nothing is certain, but we’d like to do it by crowdfunding.”

R-Type Final 2 is in development for PlayStation 4 with a crowdfunding campaign to be revealed in May.
