The World Health Organization will publish its 11th International Classification of Diseases index in 2018, which hasn’t been updated since 1992, and “gaming disorder” will be one of the new conditions added to the list. [Thanks, BBC]

Symptoms include impaired control over gaming in terms of frequency and duration, increased priority given to gaming, and continued escalation of the activity despite negative consequences. “Gaming disorder” has previously already been recognized by psychiatrists as a “condition for further study” in the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which was published in 2013.

Many countries already have identified this disorder as a major public issue, and have private clinics to treat the disorder.
