Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel, sequel to sidescrolling action game Rosenkreuzstilette, features several nods to classic games, from battles with enemies and bosses from Mega Man and Ghosts N’ Goblins making appearances, as well as some platforming moments reminiscent of Super Mario Bros.

In Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel, heroine Freudia Neuwahl is out to rescue the protagonist of the last game, who has been captured by the Pope. All Magi have been branded as outlaws after the destruction caused by the events of the last game, but Freudia remains to overthrow the Pope and bring her dear friend home.

Combat will instantly be familiar to Mega Man fans.  Freudia can shoot, slide, and jump, using her ice blaster to mow down foes in her way. Players can’t just fire constantly, though, as the basic weapon drains a magic gauge that will significantly slow their shots should it empty without being allowed to recharge. She’ll have to use this weapon to take down eight bosses who all possess their own unique abilities, which Freudia gains the use of upon defeating them. Each boss is weak to the powers of one of the other bosses, so facing them in the right order will be key.

Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel isn’t shy about its inspirations from classic platformers and sidescrollers, creating their own versions of the flaming dog enemies of Mega Man 2, the Devil from Ghosts N’ Goblins, and more, as well as having players cross spikes in something that looks quite a bit like Kuribo’s Shoe from Super Mario Bros 3.

Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel is available now on Steam and Playism.
