In Survival Game Distrust, Sleeping Brings Monsters, But Not Sleeping Brings Madness

A good night’s rest forms the crux for horror game Distrust, a survival game about several people being stranded in an arctic base where a strange monster hunts them as they rest.

While many standard survival needs must be dealt with like food, warmth, and shelter, with players combing the base for the means to stay alive using multiple characters, players will also have to handle sleep in Distrust. Sleep will keep the characters’ minds intact, but this lost arctic base (which is randomly generated on each playthrough) has a creature skulking throughout it. It hunts the characters when they rest, which puts them in danger should they choose to sleep.

Staying awake comes with a different set of problems, as each character will start to hallucinate and perceive reality differently after a while. Players can swap between the fifteen playable characters to try to get a sense of who might be hallucinating, having other characters check in to see if their visions are true, but that isn’t always a viable option. They will have to take care with what each character sees, skewing on the side of doubt or risking a dangerous few minutes of sleep to try to fix their perception.

As players balance these two elements, they will have to keep everyone alive, as well as work their way through the facility and deal with quests and missions, steadily working on a means to escape.

Distrust is available now on Steam.
