A slice of Zen on the Nintendo DS

I’m surprised to see that Mercury Games worked out a deal with Ertain to publish a series of titles known as the “Zen Series”. These aren’t traditional games, they are barely games at all. Let’s say the Zen series is relaxing Nintendo DS software. In the line up so far is Paint by DS where you color in masterpieces by Van Gogh, Cezanne and other artists with the stylus. Paint by DS (aka Kokoro wo Yasumeru Otona no Nurie DS in Japan) is scheduled to come out in Europe this August and to North America by the end of the year.

Paint by DS is the first of ten titles from Mercury Games’ Zen series. While other titles have not been officially announced Ertain’s English page mentions Aquarium by DS where you can raise whales and penguins (hey I have this!) and Matchstick Puzzle by DS. Kokoro wo Yasumeru Otona no Nurie DS 2, which comes out this September in Japan, is also likely to come out as Paint by DS 2 sometime in the future.

I wonder if anyone will buy these titles and if Mercury Games will pave the way for “non-game” DS software to come out in the future.
