Through The Woods Uses Dynamic Narration To Tell Its Horror Story As You Experience It

Norwegian studio Antagonist released a new trailer for its upcoming third-person horror game Through The Woods. Most of all, it gives us a decent listen to the protagonist’s voice as she wanders through the titular woods looking for her son.

The voiceover is a very important part of the game. The reason being that Through The Woods uses dynamic narration so that the story adapts to how you play. This works as the mother’s narration is a re-telling of what happened to her that night after she’s experienced it, rather than her talking in monologue as she walks through the woods.

As the trailer will show you, the woods that you’ll guide her through are full of gnarled trees with twisted and bare branches, some of them even look like humans in dramatic pose as part of a tableau. The reality might not be too far from that, in fact. As the horrors in Through The Woods is inspired by Norwegian folk tales – those that the game’s development team were told as children, making them too frightened to wander off into the woods alone.

That said, the nature of the horror is still a bit of a mystery despite what seems to be a chase sequence shown in the trailer, as Antagonist describe it as a “psychological horror experience about how far a mother would go to save her son.” Maybe it’s all mind tricks that spook you out.
