Star Ocean 5 brings back several elements ofĀ the series, such as intergalactic spaceships and a magical 15th to 16th century-based planet; however, the upcoming title may be a little different when it comes to the main character and his relationship with the heroine. Key developers recently sharedĀ a few detailsĀ in an interview with Dengeki.
Dengeki points out that Star Ocean 5 protagonist Fidel Camus is 23 years old, which is a little bit on the older side when compared to other RPGs. They ask if thereās any kind of reason for this.
āFidel is 23, and that is indeed a little olderĀ in comparison to the norm,ā says producer Shuichi Kobayashi. āThat said, thereās in fact a reasonĀ behind this.ā
āYes. The 23-year-old Fidel isnāt quite a youngsterĀ with no knowledge ofĀ the world, but at the same time, he isn’t an adult that has experienced the taste of the sweet and bitterĀ thingsĀ [in life],ā adds lead programmer Yoshiharu Gotonda. āHeās beginning to establish himself, but heās still in a growing process.ā
āHeāll mature to a degree, and the Fidel with his own thoughts and feelings at the start will experience various encounters and farewells in the story of Star Ocean 5, as he grows. This will be one of the highlights of the game’s story,ā Kobayashi says.
Dengeki also mentions that as Fidel grows, heāll be supported by the heroine named Miki. They say that itās very Star Ocean-esque to have two childhood friends together as part of the setting.
āIt really is,ā responds Kobayashi. āStar Ocean 1 had Roddick and Millie, Star Ocean 3 had Fayt and Sophia, and in Star Ocean 4 we had Edge and Reimi as childhood friends. However, we still donāt know whether Fidel and Mikiās relationship will be the same as these charactersā in Star Ocean titles up until now.ā
Dengeki asks if he could share a little more on that front.
āPlease do ask Gotonda-san about that, since I donāt know,ā Kobayashi responds with a laugh.
Gotonda replies, āWait! Thatās not right! Kobayashi-san, youāve already inspected all of the story!ā
Unfortunately, neither of theĀ two developersĀ goĀ beyond that, but Dengeki points out that judging by what weāve seen from the pictures, it looks like theyāll either share a sibling-like relationship, but that they wouldnāt rule out the possibility of pairing the two as a couple, either.
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness is in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
