<< How to read and understand sales
Last week, Atlus finally released Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker in Japan. The game, which is an enhanced Nintendo 3DS port of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 on the Nintendo DS, sold 53,264 copies in its first week. That figure is actually in line with the launches of previous Devil Survivor games. Here’s a look at how they sold at launch:
(2009) Devil Survivor [DS] – 55,466
(2011) Devil Survivor 2 [DS] – 63,008
(2012) Devil Survivor: Overclocked [3DS] – 20,809
As you can see, with the exception of Devil Survivor: Overclocked (a 3DS port of the first Devil Survivor), the other two games are fairly close to Record Breaker in terms of first-week sales. Given how much Record Breaker has been delayed from its original release window—July 2013—it’s interesting to see that so many people still picked the game up.
Unfortunately, we’ll never know how many copies of Record Breaker Atlus could have sold, had they managed to get the game out closer to the TV anime in 2013 as originally intended. We’ll have to wait for a Devil Survivor 3—should there ever be one—to verify if the series has seen any substantial growth since 2009.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 sales saw a slight increase for the week. Dragon Quest Heroes is launching towards the end of February, so it’s likely that people are starting to buy a PS4 in anticipation for that game.
A quick note before we proceed to the top-20 chart. Next week, sales figures will be posted a day later than usual, on February 12th. February 11th—National Foundation Day—is a public holiday in Japan.
