If you fancy that first-person shooters need a kick in the pants then Tower of Guns may be the mix-up you’re looking for, especially as it’s coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 now.

It was originally released on PC, and is a roguelike first-person shooter with plenty of old-school sentimentality attached to it. It’s all about guns, lots of guns, just bullets and guns everywhere.

The idea is to climb the titular tower of guns, and to do that you need to shoot through rooms full of, well, huge guns. The roguelike part of the game’s design means levels and enemies are procedurally generated each time you play. And when you die, permadeath means you have to start over from scratch.

Due to the game’s intentionally brutal difficulty, it’s pretty likely that you’ll die, but there are some items to help you out. You collect modifications as you bounce across the levels, which give you extra abilities such as air jumps, bouncing projectiles, increased accuracy, spread shots, and tons more.

You can’t rely on these mods to save you all the time, though. And as there is no cover to hide behind, you’re going to have to re-master the art of strafing to survive against the game’s gigantic bosses, such as the Doomball and the Egg Scrambler.

Tower of Guns is available right now at $14.99 on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It’ll be heading to PS4 and PS3 in 2015. You can find out more about the game on its website.
