Game Atelier, makers of The Flying Hamster and Sunflowers on Vita, have a sequel to their inaugural title. The gameplay in The Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed is different from what you might expect – it’s an action RPG and spiritual successor to the Monster World series.

Why did you want to make Flying Hamster II done in the style of Monster World/Wonder Boy?

Fabien Demeulenaere, Director:When we created the very first Flying Hamster, our objective was to make a 2D shooter like Parodius, because we hadn’t seen a game like that in a long time, but with actual technology.

With Flying Hamster II, we had the exact same approach but this time we drew inspiration from the Wonder Boy series that blew the minds of many 80s and 90s players. Of course we don’t want to simply make a copy of the original Wonder Boy, but we want to get as close as possible to the sensations it provides, through a new, unique and full HD game experience.

How did Newton get caught up in a fantasy world? Does Newton fly in this game too?

We take Newton as a very classic cartoon character that you can transpose in any time and place. So why not a low-fantasy universe? While keeping his abilities to fly or vomit on his foes, Newton is now able to wear armor and fight like a small knight against gigantic dragons.

In terms of story, Flying Hamster II is the direct sequel from the first episode: after deafeating the Nerdy Alien Boss, Newton finally got back his tasty golden seed and ate it at once. When the Kickstarter launches on 4.4.14, you’ll discover that this was not a great idea.

What will happen to Flying Hamster II if you do not reach your Kickstarter goals?

We seen cases in the past where after a first failure, a Kickstarter campaign is re-launched for a second round and succeeded. So if we fail but get close to our initial funding goal, we’ll seriously consider this option.

In the case we totally fail this means that we couldn’t win the heart of players with this project, so there won’t be a second chance.

The Kickstarter campaign for The Flying Hamster II is live now. Game Atelier is looking to raise $150,000 to develop the game for PC. A pledge of $12 will get you a copy of the game. If they can reach $350,000 console versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be made too.
