<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week’s biggest release in Japan was, of course, Dragon Quest X for the Wii. Or perhaps we should refer to it by its full name: Dragon Quest X: Rise of the Five Tribes Online. As the title hints, unlike the previous games in the series, Dragon Quest X is an MMORPG.

In its first week, Dragon Quest X sold 367,148 copies. That’s a far cry from Dragon Quest IX’s 2.31 million copies sold in a week, but Dragon Quest X’s real success will be measured in terms of how many subscribers pay the game’s monthly subscription fee in the months and years to come. Details of the game’s monthly subscription service can be found here.

In terms of sales numbers, the closest comparison we have to Dragon Quest X is Final Fantasy XIV, of which Square Enix shipped 190,000 copies in Japan during its launch window.

Meanwhile, New Super Mario Bros. 2 is now at about 621,000 copies sold, and was the #2 seller for the week. Persona 4: Arena, which dropped from #2 to #7 is now approximately at 150,000 copies sold.
