Nintendo has nearly an infinite supply of retro titles to place in the virtual console and Microsoft has a strong line up of arcade classics on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Instead of cashing in on old favorites Sony’s line up of downloadable content is largely original.
Fl0w is my favorite out of the bunch. In the game you swim through an infinite ocean while eating other organisms to evolve and dive deeper into harder stages. Fl0w is a game that gets as difficult as you make it and since you have control over what creatures you eat. The PS3 release includes SixAxis control where you can tilt the controller to move around your aquatic lifeform instead of the analog stick.
Blast Factor looks like Sony’s version of Geometry Wars. The fast paced shooting style of the game and the colorful particle effects is highly reminiscent of Bizarre Creation’s game. Except the difference is that the game has self adjusting difficulty where it selects the next level depending on a player’s skill and SixAxis tilt functionality where tilting the controller causes waves to push enemies aside.
Criminal Crackdown looks like a mix of Grand Theft Auto and a fast paced party game. In Criminal Crackdown you play a bounty hunter who is trying to apprehend criminals to pick up reward money. Four players can play Criminal Crackdown with a split screen or you can play online through the unnamed PS3 online service.
Other titles for download include Lemmings 2, Go! Sudoku and Go! Swizzleblock2, a block switching game.
