Miyamoto Not Sure How A New F-Zero Game Could Still Surprise Players

It’s been a long time since Nintendo released an F-Zero game. The last new game in the series was F-Zero Climax, released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. Prior to that, F-Zero GX was developed for the Gamecube in collaboration with Sega, and released in 2003. Then, last year, Nintendo gave away 2001’s F-Zero: Maximum Velocity to early Nintendo 3DS buyers for free.

So, when are getting a new F-Zero game? Are we getting one? U.K. publication, Edge, recently posed this question to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto.

“I think at the time it [F-Zero] was a really big surprise, a new thing, a product that made sense,” Miyamoto replied. “I don’t see with current hardware how you could create a similar surprise.”

That doesn’t mean a new F-Zero is out of the question, however. Miyamoto continued: “But maybe with future hardware, with Wii U coming up, maybe we could create something that does make sense, either as a smaller game, or a fully fledged title.”
