As a RPG with roguelike elements, players may be tempted to save as much as possible in Darkest Dungeon 2. Compared to other RPGs, saving in Darkest Dungeon 2 is more akin to roguelike games such as Hades. This guide will show you how saving is implemented in Darkest Dungeon 2.

How does saving work in Darkest Dungeon 2?

Darkest Dungeon 2 has an auto-save feature built into every action a player takes in the game. Whether you’ve consumed an item or attacked an enemy, the game automatically saves your progress. This can lead to every choice the player makes being permanent. With roguelike elements in Darkest Dungeon 2, a player’s choice is important to how the game plays.

Below are a few of the locations and actions that auto-save in Darkest Dungeon 2:

  • After attacking an opponent
  • After taking damage
  • After using items in combat
  • The Altar of Hope
  • Defeating enemies
  • Purchasing items at the Inn
  • Nodes on the map
  • Upgrading Skills

Manual saves are not an option in Darkest Dungeon 2. However, knowing where the game saves provides solace for players. In between traversing to nodes on the map, saving is lenient. Darkest Dungeon 2 doesn’t save unless damage is caused to the Stagecoach, an item is obtained, or the player encounters an enemy.

Darkest Dungeon 2 is a roguelike RPG where players take control of a party of Heroes as they traverse the dark terrors of the land. Equip items and battle ghoulish enemies as Heroes with different skills. Build relationships with the Affinity System to boost the Heroes’ abilities. Released on July 15, 2024 for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox, Darkest Dungeon 2 is a sequel to Red Hook Studio’s gothic RPG, Darkest Dungeon. In addition to consoles, this roguelike RPG was released in early access on PC in 2020 with an official release date on May 8, 2023.

Play Darkest Dungeon 2 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
