Trails through Daybreak does indeed feature a relationship system, similar to previous games in the series. This system, however, extends beyond just romantic interactions or even just interactions with party members.

Let’s take a look at how this system blends both Van’s romantic and platonic relationships.

Trails through Daybreak relationship system explained

In Trails through Daybreak, Van can build his relationships with party members and some major NPCs through the connect system. By gaining points with these characters and leveling up their bond, Van can gain various rewards such as passive buffs or exclusive items.

Van can gain connect points with characters a handful of ways. Giving gifts and watching movies with characters will give a handful of points. However, connect events throughout the game will lead to the most points for the chosen character. These events also reveal pieces of story about the characters and can help to flesh out the games cast.

While it’s not possible to max out everyone’s relationship in a single playthrough, progress carries over in New Game+. This means you can prioritize which characters events you’d like to see, but can pick up the rest on another playthrough.

While some characters have more romantically inclined connect events, Trails through Daybreak does not feature separate romance options. The system is akin to previous games in the series, where relationship-building is layered and not solely focused on romance.

Fans familiar with the series will find that Trails through Daybreak continues the tradition of blending deep character interactions with a mix of romantic and platonic relationships.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is available on the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.
