Weirdest Final Fantasy Weapon Types

Playable characters in Final Fantasy games have wielded all sorts of different weapons. Let’s take a look at some of the weirdest weapon types we’ve seen characters choose in the Final Fantasy series.

Which playable characters had the weirdest weapon types in Final Fantasy?

Keep in mind weird doesn’t mean bad or really anything negative. I’m just looking to highlight some of Final Fantasy characters’ strangest weapon selections when heading into battle. From stuffed animals to actual animals, let’s dive in!

Lulu’s Dolls in Final Fantasy X

You know, for someone comically covered in belts, you’d think her weapon would have been like a belt whip. Granted, that would have been weird, too, but less than this. Instead, Lulu has creepy plush dolls that help her cast her magic.

Sure, moogles are cute. However, have you ever seen one dance around before a Firaga hits you square in the face? Not so cute anymore. It’s not just moogles, she’s got some cactuar dolls and even a little Onion Knight.

Squall’s Gunblade in Final Fantasy VIII

Like I said before, weird doesn’t mean it’s not cool. The gunblade is awesome! In fact, it’s been one of my favorite JRPG weapons ever since I first played Final Fantasy VIII. However, let’s not ignore that it is absolutely one of the weirdest Final Fantasy weapon types.

I mean, the idea alone is just cool but impractical. Do you reload it? We never see Squall doing any kind of maintenance. Even in universe only Squall and Seifer use the weapon because it’s so unwieldy and difficult. But man, it sure is awesome. I’d put that on a wall for sure.

Cait Sith’s Megaphone in Final Fantasy VII

Cait Sith may be the poster child for weird Final Fantasy characters. Everything about him is strange, even down to some spoilery elements of his character. His weapon is no different: a megaphone. He uses this to shout commands to the robot moogle he rides. I mean, I guess it’s got a lore purpose, but come on.

When you share the party with people wielding “giant sword” and “gun for a hand” is megaphone moving the needle? He is a pretty good spellcaster though, so maybe the megaphone also amplifies spells? I’m grasping at straws. It’s all just weird, and his limit break is just random. It’s like he’s the embodiment of chaos.

Wakka’s Blitzball in Final Fantasy X

So, Wakka’s thing is he hits people with blitzballs. Now, admittedly, I don’t want to be hit in the face with any kind of professional sports ball, so it’s probably effective most of the time. However, Wakka is fighting giant monsters and literal gods. I can’t help but feel like he could have grabbed really anything else.

But it works for him. Heck, his ultimate ball is even covered in spikes. That would certainly up the challenge of the sport. Actually, that’s a good point. Where did the more weaponized balls come from? Are there other people fighting with blitzballs out there?

Quina’s Forks in Final Fantasy IX

As weird as using forks as weapons is, it may be the least weird thing about Quina. Similar to Cait Sith, this character’s whole thing is just being strange. The forks do actually serve their intended purpose though. You see, Quina uses the forks to eat enemies. Eating enemies, of course, grants Quina access to their magic! You know, just standard JRPG stuff.

Setzer’s Cards, Dice, and Darts in Final Fantasy VI

Setzer is about as cool as they come in Final Fantasy. He’s got a number of strange weaponry all built around gambling. I’m not sure exactly how most of it works as far as lore goes, but it essentially means he fights with a bit of luck involved.

Setzer’s weapon of choice is fairly tame, seeing as this is the same game where another guy suplexes a train! It’s interesting that both he and Cait Sith have this randomness to their characters and made the list. Maybe they just like giving “gambler” type characters weird gear.

Rinoa’s Angelo Cannon in Final Fantasy VIII

Ok, so technically, this one is only a limit break. However, I still consider it a weird weapon because Rinoa fires her dog at the enemy. At least, it seems like Angelo is on board the entire way. Everyone always wants to know if you can pet the dog in games.
