The PlayStation 4 felt like a much-needed rebound for Sony after the complicated and expensive PS3. The PS4 took over its generation, beating the Xbox One in sales by a large margin. But how many PS4s have actually been sold?
PS4 Total Sales Figure Explained
The current total sales figure for the PS4 stands at just over 117 million consoles sold thus far. This is impressive, especially given the conversation at the time of its launch about the impending doom for video game systems. If you exclude the Switch from the equation, the amount of PS4s sold won by a landslide. (Thanks, Statista!)
It defeated its main competitor, the Xbox One, by a substantial amount, as the Microsoft home console only managed around 58 million units in the same timeframe. That puts the PS4 at nearly double the number of units as the Xbox One. In addition, it also easily beat out Nintendo’s Wii U, which only garnered around 13.56 million consoles sold.
How the PS4 Compares to Past Sony Consoles
You may wonder how the PS4 compares to past Sony consoles, which often dominated the generations they appeared in since the company entered the console race. Interestingly enough, the PS4 only loses to the PS2 regarding its sibling systems. Given that the PS5 is already out, it will unlikely come close to beating the whopping 152 million or so units the PS2 sold in its time.
That said, the PS4 is in second place for the video game publisher, beating out the PS3, PS1, PS5 (at least for now), PSP, and PlayStation Vita by a long shot. The only systems to beat the PS4 outside Sony platforms are the Game Boy & Color lines, the Nintendo Switch, and the DS. The PS4 will likely pass the Game Boy line by the end of its lifetime since it stands at around 118.69 million units.
