In the Kingdom Hearts series, players travel to various Disney-themed worlds, each with its unique storyline, characters, and gameplay mechanics. When it comes to Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts, a few infamous locations stand out as the worst for their frustrating mechanics and lackluster design.
Many worlds allow players to interact with beloved Disney characters and experience new adventures. However, not all Disney worlds shine, and some have left players feeling more frustrated than enchanted.
Here’s a closer look at these less-than-magical worlds that many fans would rather forget.
The worst Disney worlds in the Kingdom Hearts series
Atlantica (Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2)
This entry is a two-for-one deal of disappointment. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Atlantica is essentially a rhythm mini-game, adding little value to the overall experience. The first game’s version of Atlantica is a frustrating mess, arriving too late in the game and locking players out of most of their abilities. Navigating underwater combat feels clunky and unintuitive. Thankfully, both iterations of Atlantica are optional.
Land of the Dragons (Kingdom Hearts 2)
While not as egregious as some others, Land of the Dragons is a bland and forgettable world. Mulan, despite being a great character, doesn’t add much to the party’s dynamic. The keyblade obtained here is notably weak, and the world only becomes slightly more enjoyable on a second visit.
Deep Jungle (Kingdom Hearts)
Tarzan’s world, Deep Jungle, is notoriously confusing and difficult to navigate, especially for newcomers. The story elements, like Clayton’s descent into darkness, are intriguing but the boss fight against him is a huge difficulty spike early game. The absence of the Cure spell until after this fight adds to the frustration.
Disney Town (Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep)
Disney Town is simply annoying to play and traverse. Its visuals are dull, and the activities in the world are uninspired. The potential for a fun, engaging world is wasted, leaving players with a monotonous experience. It doesn’t help that it sort of sticks out like a thumb among the other levels.
Arrendale (Kingdom Hearts 3)
Easily the worst by far, Arrendale rehashes the plot of Frozen with minimal involvement from Sora and his friends. They mostly stand around during cutscenes, making the world feel like a passive experience. While “Let It Go” is a fantastic song, the full performance in the middle of the level feels unnecessary and intrusive. It’s also just, in a word, boring.
While the Kingdom Hearts series offers many enchanting Disney worlds, these five stand out for all the wrong reasons. Whether due to poor design, frustrating mechanics, or lackluster storytelling, they have earned their place as the worst Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts.
Kingdom Hearts is now available on the PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam.
