Toward the end of last month it was announced that Legendary Entertainment had acquired the rights to begin making a Pokémon movie: a live-action film based on the Detective Pikachu character from the Nintendo 3DS game Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo.

While the movie won’t start production until some time next year, Variety has learned that Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch are “in negotiations” to become the writers of the film’s script.

Nicole Perlman wrote the script for the film adaptation of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” with James Gunn. She is also set to work on the upcoming “Captain Marvel” alongside Meg Lefauve.

Meanwhile, Alex Hirsch is best-known for creating Disney’s “Gravity Falls,” a cartoon which began airing in June of 2012 and swiftly gained a cult following.

As far as distribution goes, Universal Pictures will handle the Detective Pikachu movie outside of Japan, while Toho will be in charge of the film in Japan.
