<< How to read and understand sales
Following the delayed sales and rankings from the week prior, Media Crates updated with the latest Japanese sales data from this past week of December 28th through January 3rd. For the first time in a while, we didn’t have any new releases for the week.
This marks the first week going into 2016 and also the first week after Christmas, so there are noticeable drops throughout software and hardware sales. Monster Hunter X continued leading the pack with a strong finish on top at the end of 2015 with Monster Strike following in second place. Splatoon should also get a mention for consistently selling well throughout most of the year.
Monster Hunter X hit a milestone of 2.5 million units in sales, a few months earlier than what Capcom’s expected date of March 31, 2016 for hitting the figure, so they can add another one to their list of successful titles from the series.
One missing title that stands out is Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Genei Ibun Roku#FE) which failed to make the top-20 list, meaning that it sold less than 8,122 units total a week after its release.
In the previous sales report, we looked at various possibilities as to why it sold on the lower end with only 26,340 units moved in its first week. While the sales figures were actually from the last day of Media Create’s data of the previous week, a lot of us expected to see its numbers rise a little more for the following week. That said, Nintendo and Atlus are probably going to be scratching their heads about this one.
On a lighter note, it’s pretty interesting to see titles New Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart 7, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf make the list. We can assume that these titles likely got a boost from those who got shiny new consoles or handhelds for Christmas, and decided to pick up a few popular games.
