A recent Game Informer magazine feature with Rocksteady touches upon the creation of the Batmobile for Batman: Arkham Knight, and in the feature, creative director Sefton Hill and other members of the team provide a little more insight into the personality that the vehicle will bring to the game.
You’ll be able to call the Batmobile using the L1 button, and it will speed to your location, wherever in Gotham you are. Upon the car’s arrival, any thugs you’re fighting will scatter, should they happen to be in its path, and you’ll be able to jump into its cockpit as it comes racing toward you.
While parked by itself, the Batmobile will have defensive capabilities, too. Should any thugs be daring enough to try and touch or carjack the vehicle, they’ll get a “shocking surprise,” Rocksteady says.
Driving in the Batmobile is Batman: Arkham Knight’s fastest way to travel across the city. Hill shares that Rocksteady didn’t want to implement a fast-travel system into the game, as traversing across the city yourself is an important part of the experience in the Arkham games. Additionally, while driving, you’ll be able to eject out of the Batmobile at will, and launch yourself into a glide.
Finally, Hill revealed that early prototyping for the Batmobile was done using Batman: Arkham City’s map as an experiment. Unfortunately, Rocksteady found that the game’s streets were too narrow to accommodate the vehicle, and that the streets in Arkham Knight would need to be designed to be wider. Building heights, too, needed to be increased, to accommodate the Batmobile’s ejection seat.
