Last week, Nintendo released Tomodachi Collection: New Life in Japan, which was the best-selling game for the week. In case you don’t know what the Tomodachi Collection games are about, looking through this explanation before you read any further might help.

Tomodachi Collection: New Life sold close to 405,000 copies in its first week on store shelves. That’s a significant improvement over the original Tomodachi Collection on Nintendo DS, which sold around 102,000 copies at launch.

The increase in launch sales can be attributed to fans that liked the first game putting their money down early for the new one. Even with its slower start, the first Tomodachi Collection eventually reached sales of over 3.7 million in Japan, so the second game can draw from a large audience that is now familiar with the series. Additionally, games with a social element tend to do particularly well on the 3DS, so it should be interesting to see how sales hold up going forward.

At #2 was Namco Bandai’s Naruto Shippudden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. The game sold 87,661 copies in its first week and was followed at #3 by 7th Dragon 2020-II, developed by Imageepoch and published by Sega for the PSP.

7th Dragon 2020-II sold nearly 74,000 copies in its first week. Unfortunately, that’s a lower debut than its predecessor, 7th Dragon 2020, which was released in November 2011 and sold 122,498 copies at launch. Furthermore, sales of 2020-II were even lower than those of the original 7th Dragon game on Nintendo DS. That game sold nearly 80,000 copies in its first week.

The top-20 chart for the week was as follows:
